Dietary supplement health and education act of 1994 (DSHEA)

Remember that under this act, supplements are mainly unregulated, without proof of effectiveness or safety. This act mandates that the FDA regulate dietary supplements as foods, rather than as drugs and as a result, they are not subject to the same safety and efficacy testing requirements placed on medications. They are however subject to the FDA regulations regarding misbranding and adulteration. The FDA can only take action against dietary supplements once they have been proven to be unsafe.
